The History Of Glassware

Jun 09, 2023

The first glassmakers in the world were the ancient Egyptians. The appearance and use of glass in human life has a history of more than 4,000 years, from 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, there have been small glass beads unearthed.

In the 12th century AD, commercial glass appeared and began to become an industrial material. In the 18th century, optical glass was produced to meet the needs of telescopes. In 1874, Belgium was the first to make flat glass. In 1906, the United States made a flat glass guide machine, since then, with the industrialization and scale of glass production, a variety of uses and various properties of glass have come out. In modern times, glass has become an important material in daily life, production and the field of science and technology.

More than 3,000 years ago, a European Phoenician merchant ship loaded with the crystalline mineral "natural soda" sailed on the Berus River along the Mediterranean coast. The merchant ship ran aground because of the low tide, so the crew boarded the beach. Some of the crew also carried large POTS, carried firewood, and used several pieces of "natural soda" as the support of the large pot to cook meals on the beach.

When the crew had finished eating, the tide began to rise. They were about to pack up and board the ship to continue sailing when suddenly someone shouted: "Come and see, everyone, there are some glittering and sparkling things on the sand under the pot!"

The crew took these shiny objects on board and studied them carefully. They found some quartz sand and melted natural soda stuck to the glitter. It turns out that these flashing things are the natural soda used to make POTS when they cook, under the action of the flame, and the quartz sand on the beach produced by chemical reaction, which is the earliest glass. Later, the Phoenicians mixed quartz sand with natural soda, and then melted it in a special furnace to make glass balls, which made the Phoenicians a great fortune.

Around the 4th century, the ancient Romans began to apply glass to doors and Windows, and by 1291, glass manufacturing technology in Italy was very well developed.

In this way, Italian glass artisans were sent to an isolated island to produce glass, and they were not allowed to leave the island for the rest of their lives.

In 1688, a man named Neff invented the process of making large pieces of glass, and since then, glass has become a common object.
