Classification and use of red wine glass
Sep 23, 2022
According to the type of wine, we can roughly divide wine glasses into red wine glasses, white wine glasses, champagne glasses, special wine glasses and international standard tasting glasses (ISO tasting glasses).
1. Red wine glass
The red wine glass generally has a large belly and a wide mouth, which is conducive to the release of aromas of the wine, and the wide mouth will make the wine taste more round and smooth. Common red wine glasses are Bordeaux glasses and Bordeaux glasses.
①Bordeaux cup has a long body and a narrow mouth. This cup shape can gather the aroma of the wine at the mouth of the glass and is suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel. Full-bodied red wines such as Zinfandel and Malbec.
② The Burgundy cup is short, and its classic feature is a large belly shaped like a sphere, which is suitable for Burgundy wines with delicate aroma. Its large belly can guide the wine from the tip of the tongue, and the narrowed inward can better concentrate the wine aroma of Burgundy red wine.
2. White wine glass
Compared with the red wine glass, the white wine glass has a smaller belly, and the glass body is close to a U shape. This reduces the contact between the wine and the air, allowing the aroma to last longer. But some full-bodied white wines, such as oak-fermented Chardonnay, aged white wines and some vintage sparkling wines, usually use a larger bowl-shaped white wine glass. This type of glass can accentuate the creaminess of these wines even more.
3. Champagne glasses
Champagne glasses are suitable for all sparkling wines. Most of the champagne glasses are slender and small, and the common ones are tulip glasses and flute glasses. The tulip cup, named for its shape like a tulip, is very popular with women. The flute cup is slender and narrow, with an elegant shape. The slender cup shape provides room for the bubbles to rise, which helps to keep the sparkling wine bubbly for a long time.
4. Specialty wine glasses
To drink special wine, we need to choose special wine glasses. For example, fortified wines such as Port or Sherry, we need to choose a short dessert wine glass.
5. International standard wine tasting glass (ISO wine tasting glass)
The international standard wine tasting glass, the ISO wine tasting glass, is the most common type of wine glass in tasting sessions. The uniqueness of the ISO tasting glass is that it will not highlight any characteristics of the wine, and can better show the flavor and characteristics of the wine itself, ensuring a relatively stable drinking quality.
Whether the wine glass is suitable or not can affect the tasting experience. A suitable wine glass can let you experience many details in the wine. If the wine glass is not selected properly, the tasting experience is likely to be greatly reduced. Wine glasses are not as expensive as possible. There is only one principle in the selection of wine glasses, which is to choose according to the characteristics of the wine itself.
