Formation of glass

Dec 24, 2024

Glass is formed by melting together sand and other chemicals (the main raw materials for production are: soda ash, limestone, quartz). Glass is usually divided into oxide glass and non-oxide glass according to the main composition. There are few varieties and quantities of non-oxide glass, mainly sulfur glass and halide glass. The anions of chulfide glass are mostly sulfur, selenium, tellurium, etc., which can cut off short-wavelength light and pass through yellow, red, and near and far infrared light, with low resistance and switching and memory characteristics. Halide glass has low refractive index and low dispersion, and is mostly used as optical glass. The chemical composition of ordinary glass is Na2O·CaO·6SiO2, the main component is silicon dioxide, which is an amorphous solid with an irregular structure. Widely used in buildings, used to isolate the wind and light, belongs to the mixture. Another mixed with some metal oxides or salts to show the color of colored glass, and through the special method of tempered glass and so on. Sometimes some transparent plastics (such as polymethyl methacrylate) are also called plexiglass.
